I started practising Qi Gong and Tai Chi Chuan back in 1992 when I left the Army. At the time, I was looking for a way to keep fit as my knees and back were in a sorry state after running too many miles with and without a heavy pack on my back. I quickly came to realise that there is so much more to it than just a physical exercise. It brings together so much of what I seek on my own journey and in my work - body, mind and spirit working in harmony.
Qi Gong means ‘energy nurtured with skill’. It's an ancient Chinese practice designed to enhance the flow of chi or energy in and around our physical bodies. It is based on an understanding of our nature as human and living beings – that we are dynamic, interwoven energy systems rather than separate mechanisms. It encourages good physical health, emotional balance and resilience and mental strength. It brings into balance the Three Treasures - Jing (our sexual energy), Qi (our life force) and Shen (our spiritual energy and consciousness). Qi Gong consists of many thousands of breathing, movement and meditational exercises that help enhance the flow of energy. As a stagnant pond becomes silted and a source of disease and a fast flowing stream brings vigour, freshness and purity so it is with our mind and body. As a stick or branch held too rigidly can be broken and the green, flexible bamboo survives so it is with our mind and body. Qi Gong encourages flexibility and flow in both body and mind. |
